In a corner of Shibuya PARCO,a serene space has appeared-one that seems to alter the very density of the air around it. It is the fragrances and the body care store of the Copenhagen-based design studio FRAMA, and their first location outside of Denmark.
Founded in 2011 by creative director Niels Strøyer Christophersen,FRAMA has become a brand admired by creators and culturally attuned audiences around the world. Working from a former 19th century pharmacy, the studio produces furniture, lighting, bodycare, and fragrance. What unites all of their creations is a powerful focus on physical, sensory reality-almost as if resisting the overwhelming flow of digital information that defines contemporary life.
To explore the core of FRAMA, we conducted an email interview with Niels himself. Through fragments of the five senses-sight,smell,sound,touch,and taste-we unravel the memories, travels, and invisible sensory experiences that have shaped his aesthetic perspective. We also delve into his personal connection with Japanese culture, a country he has visited many times, and explore why Shibuya PARCO was chosen as the place to introduce FRAMA to Tokyo now.
――When visiting Japan, have you experienced any"new sensations"that are hard to describe, moments that engage the five senses? For instance, the way light falls,or the scent of the earth after rain. Could you share any experiences like this that have sparked your creativity?
I'm always amazed by the serenity that you can experience at the Ryokan that really plays with all the senses. Those spaces have the power, or at least it feels like that, to make time stand still. On this last trip, we visited the Fukuoka and Saga regions in southern Japan. We passed by the Yoyokaku Ryoken which also contains an impressive ceramic / pottery gallery. Its atmosphere is pure, the air is timeless, the visual moments are meticulous.
―― Do you see any connections between Japanese culture and FRAMA's creative work or your own design philosophy?
I appreciate the subtleness combined with strength and clarity that for me envelopes Japanese culture. Something that resonates with me and something that I believe also fits the characteristics of FRAMA as a whole. The"complexity of the simpleness"is also something I keep experiencing and realising as I move around in Japan. Almost invisible layers upon layers creates an extremely refined and sophisticated society that from an outsider almost happens effortlessly and in a"super natural"way.
Coming from a small country like Denmark with 6M habitants its impressive how the society of Tokyo and Japan in general operates its everyday so smoothly. I've been to Tokyo more than times over the years and it always fascinates me how little chaos there is,how little noise there is,how calm and focused people are. I feel I experience a culture that rest in themselves and appreciate good things takes time.
―― Is there a scent that has remained deeply imprinted in your memory, or one that has served as a source of inspiration? Could you also tell us what kind of emotions that scent evokes for you?
When I grew up, friends of my parents owned a beeswax candle factory. One time I was left in the car sleeping outside the place but woke up after a little while. I got out of the car and walk around at the waxed candle factory on my own. The smell of the freshly produced beeswax candles was really mesmerising and something that is still imprinted in my memory.
―― What kinds of sounds are you drawn to? Alternatively, what music has most influenced your personal development?
Jazz music is my favourite genre of music. I appreciate the organic soundscape that jazz music offers. The artist Ahmad Jamal is a great example of sound that is surprising, organic and full of quality. In another life I would love to learn to play some instruments.
――FRAMA's furniture and bottles possess distinctive textures that naturally draw you to touch them. Could you explain the thoughtful design elements that went into creating these products?
FRAMA is born out of an appreciation of spaces and a high sensitivity to spatial atmosphere in general. It was natural for us to seek a bottle experience that is both a precious object in your home and processes the qualities if subtleness. We appreciate the analogue experience of a physical label rather than something printed directly on a bottle. And our aim was to introduce a collection focusing on the essential and foundational within Care, but in terms of product assortment but also in terms of identity. We wanted to focus on the pure and very meaningful rather than quantity and complexity. The light tinted glass helps preservation of the natural oils, the bone-white matte label represents Care and the only essential text on the label creates a calm and timeless expression. These are the same ingredients that creates the foundations for developing our interior universe and the two universes FRAMA Home and FRAMA Care is tightly interlinked in this matter and that's also why they compliment each other.
―― Food experiences stimulate the five senses through the interaction of ingredients, tableware, and lighting. Have there been any moments during your travels that especially awakened your senses?
Since the very beginning, FRAMA has been hosting dinners for friends, collaborators and partners. Dinners has been a integral part of FRAMA's ethos and this was the very ritual that lead us to start our F&B adventure called Apotek 57。 Some of the most memorable dinners abroad has been dinners we hosted in Tokyo. Places that offers a personal setting, that shows care and passion for the different senses is where I feel most stimulated and where the impression is biggest. Tokyo in particular offers great many places with unique layouts that are not fabricated and generic but instead original and authentic. Places where the owners has a curated universe that is a direct translation of them as people is the places I admire and appreciate visiting.
―― Have you had any distinctive ways of perceiving the world or personal rituals that you've valued since childhood?
Since childhood I've been very observant and aware of my surroundings. Not in a"noting down kind of way"but more observant in an organic way taking in the experiences and spaces I would come across and then move on. I'm the middle child of three boys and probably that enhanced my persona of being extra observant with the different dynamics that every family holds. When I was living in Paris (2005) while doing my studies it was very overwhelming, in a positive way, factoring in my personality trait. There were many new cultures and environments that did not exist in Copenhagen. Living the majority of the time in the 19arr., I was surrounded by Jewish-, Arabic-, Chinese people and French bohemians of course. The city of Paris was offering fine art galleries, impressive architecture and museums and great cinema experiences. Fostering this personality trait and becoming more self-aware of it has helped me shape what FRAMA is today.
――Shibuya, where Shibuya PARCO is located, is one of the most vibrant and fast-evolving cities in the world. How do you approach creating FRAMA within such a dynamic environment?
Our aim with the shop was to create a little quieter space inside PARCO to contrast with the more dynamic and vibrant brands that's also exist inside PARCO. The juxtaposition is also something that FRAMA often seeks in smaller and larger scales. PARCO is a great window to the international scene of Tokyo and something we appreciate being part of. With the 16m2 our ambition with the space is to create a highly functional and practical space for our Care products in terms of display and flow and at the same time convey our philosophy as a spatial Care brand. With FRAMA's background in spaces and interior architecture, pure materials the shop interior is framing this philosophy. The space offers different textures that interact with each other in a subtle way from the rough wall-texture, sleek stainless steel display units, dark birch wooden counters. All the pure materials are contemplating the series of light grey tinted glass bottles that is our signature container. We wanted to maximise the space but at the same time make the space light and area.
Hopefully the visitor will experience a Care brand originates from a spatial background where a holistic approach to experience is key for the brand and product experience. Hopefully this ambience will adherence at some level the visitors lifestyle experience.
